Understanding Dry Eye

Tears produced by your tear glands help to moisturize and lubricate the eye. Over time, dust particles and dirt can block the tear glands. When this occurs, the glands will be unable to produce enough tears for the lubrication of the eyes. This can result in pain, discomfort, or swollen eyelids. This condition is referred to as Dry Eye Syndrome.

At our Dry Eye Center, we aim to provide fast, soothing, and effective relief to your dry eye condition. Over the years, we have known to offer top eye care services to patients all over West Orange.

Our experienced dry eye doctors, Dr. Schlussel and Dr. Tao, will provide stellar treatment procedures for your dry eye syndrome. Their excellent care and effective dry eye syndrome treatment will help you get the relief that you deserve.

About Dry Eye

What Is Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry eye syndrome is a chronic eye condition that occurs when the Meibomian glands or tear glands become blocked. This condition can also occur when the tiny oil glands located beneath the eyelashes become clogged with dust particles, dirt, or debris. Thus, the tear glands will become unable to function effectively.

What Are the Symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry eye patients often experience a lot of discomfort and pain. Their vision will often become impaired. Some of the signs and symptoms of dry eye syndrome include:

  • Dryness
  • Redness
  • Tearing
  • Stinging eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Itchy eyes
  • Crusty eyelids
  • A gritty sensation
  • Burning eyes
  • The sensation of a foreign body in the eye
Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome

The primary causes of dry eye syndrome include dry, dusty, and windy environments, infection, aging, and prescription drugs. Direct exposure of the eyes to equipment at home such as heating and cooling systems, electronic devices, computer monitors, mobile phone screens, televisions, tablets, laptops, etc. can also bring about the dry eye condition.

What’s more, dry eye syndrome are often caused by medical conditions such as meibomian gland dysfunction, lupus, blepharitis, arthritis, diabetes, and thyroid problems. Contact lenses and eyeglasses are also known to cause dry eyes. The pain and discomfort will be minimal initially. However, if not taken care of immediately, it can eventually become complicated.

For this reason, the moment you begin to feel any pain or discomfort in your eyes, do not hesitate to visit our eye care center in West Orange. Dr. Schlussel and Dr. Tao will perform a detailed eye exam.

Dry Eye Statistics: How Many People Suffer from Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry Eye is a prevalent condition which we treat at our Dry Eye Center. A recent study carried out by Harris Interactive, shows that about 70% of patients who suffer from dry eye syndrome don’t ever see an eye care specialist. This is slightly disturbing as many of these patients are only putting their vision in danger.

Another study conducted by Harris Interactive also revealed that almost half of Americans experience one or more dry eye symptoms regularly. In fact, about 52% of women and 43% of men experience dry eye symptoms. Also, individuals who wear contact lenses and eyeglasses are more susceptible to dry eye syndrome compared to individuals with perfect vision.

What’s more, in order to achieve relief, most dry eye patients opt for over the counter eye drops. Many of these patients manage their dry eye condition to some extent. On the other hand, about 59% of adults said they needed to visit an eye physician to help manage their dry eye condition.

Fortunately, we conduct comprehensive eye exams at our Dry Eye Center to help determine the condition of your eyes. Dr. Schlussel and his team will provide the highest quality care for your condition.
